Why Mindfulness Should Be A Subject Taught In School

For some students living in England, this is already a reality.

In one of the largest programs of its kind, 370 English schools are introducing mindfulness as a course of study in an effort to improve youth mental health by the British government. In February, The New York Times reported that students will work with mental health experts to learn about relaxation techniques, breathing exercises and other methods in an effort to help regulate their emotions.

The introduction of this program comes months after a survey commissioned by the National Health Service found that one in eight children in England between the ages of 5 and 19 suffered from at least one mental disorder at the time of their assessment in 2017.

Starting to teach kids the power of mindfulness will be tremendously beneficial as they grow up and face the inevitable stress that comes with higher education, work and family pressures.  New research from Oregon State University suggests that while mindfulness will never be a replacement for sleep, overworked entrepreneurs who can’t afford adequate sleep may be able to replenish their energy with meditation and mindfulness exercises. The study suggests that "As little as 70 minutes a week, or 10 minutes a day, of mindfulness practice, may have the same benefits as an extra 44 minutes of sleep a night.

For entrepreneurs and overworked executives where more sleep is simply not a reality, short mindfulness exercises may be a real game-changer in helping to fight exhaustion, which can be a major factor affecting overall work performance.
